Voicing deep concern over the growing political violence, Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday urged the chiefs of two major parties to reach an understanding as the two hold the key to overcoming the present crisis.
“Achieving a mutual understanding between the two leaders (Hasina and Khaleda) is very urgent to protect democracy and common people’s interest at this critical juncture,” TIB executive director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said in a statement.
At the same time, he said, it is imperative for the top leaders of the both camps to show restraint and responsible behaviour.
“The power-centric political violence and an unhealthy competition of using power, which have turned inhuman and brutal, are violating people’s basic rights and putting the good governance and the democratic march at risk,” the TIB executive director observed.
He urged the political parties to amicably reach a consensus shunning violence and undemocratic attitude.
Iftekharuzzaman noted that the current political crisis is not only pushing the good governance and democratic progress backwards but the democratic institutions are also turning ineffective due to the absence of a healthy political culture.
The TIB executive director urged the political parties, especially the two major ones, to observe their political programmes in a peaceful manner for the sake of the country.
