Police arrested Jubo League leader Omar Khaiyyam Ropon (42) at Bogura on Thursday. At the time of his arrest, Ropon had with him in possession one foreign pistol, 2 pistol magazines and 8 rounds of ammunition. He was wanted in connection with several cases, including the killing of ex-Chhatra League leader Jewel.
Ropon is the son of Omar Farooq Sarker from Mohishbathan village, Bogura Sadar Upazila, Moreover, he was the General Secretary of Jubo League 3 no. ward unit, Bogura Pouroshovbha. He was recently removed from his post after the murder of ex-Chhatra League leader Shakhawat Hossain Jewel. After that, he was known in the area as a Jubo League armed cadre. Moreover, after his arrest, police recovered several local weapons and arrested 4 more criminals in separate drives.
According to police sources, a team of detective police led by Additional Police Superintendent (West) Arifur Rahman Mondol made a raid at about 2:30 am on Wednesday at a cattle farm in Mohishbatan, from wherein they arrested Jubo League leader Omar Khaiyyam Ropon alias ‘Hatakata’ Ropon. At the time, they recovered a 7.65 barrel foreign pistol, 2 pistol magazines and 8 rounds of live ammunition.
At a press briefing on Thursday afternoon, Police superintendent Asaduzzaman informed that there were several murder and extortion cases against Ropon, the most notorious of them being the killing of ex-Chhatra League leader Jewel in 2010. Previously, he had been arrested in the Jewel murder case along with weapons as well.
A case pertaining to possession of illegal weaponry has been filed against Ropon in this regard.
