49 extrajudicial killings have been reported in the press over the past 40 days in Bangladesh (Jan 1 – Feb 9 2015). The cases include:
28 in “crossfire” after arrest. This is when an individual is arrested and his body found days later with bullet wounds. Police allege they were killed in a “gunfight”. Postmortems reveal the bullets were shot at close range.
5 in “lorry incident” after arrest. This is when an individual is arrested and his abused body later discovered. Police allege they were hit by a truck.
2 in police custody.
6 shot during processions.
5 by ruling party activist attacks.
3 by stabbing, beating or strangling.
