The National Committee for the Protection of Oil-Gas and Mineral Resource, Power and Ports on Saturday demanded immediate cancellation of the projects that might cause destruction of the Sunderbans and giving gas blocks to foreign companies.
Addressing a discussion on ‘anti-Sunderbans projects and deals regarding gas: government’s machinations’ as the chair, the committee convener Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah announced a countrywide demonstration for May 21 demanding government steps to increase ability of Petrobangla and Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited by stopping Sunderbans destroying projects and stop of government’s machinations to give mineral resources including gas to foreign companies.
The discussion was held at Mukti Bhaban on Moni Singh Road in the city.
Speakers at the meeting alleged that the government had been advancing with different Sunderbans destroying projects bypassing expert and people’s opinions and had approved Rampal Power Project of NTPC and Orion Power Project.
They alleged that the government was handing over different gas blocks in the bay and in the lands to the foreign companies without giving proper chance to BAPEX and without increasing its ability though the prime minister had assured one year ago that no gas block in land areas would be given to any foreign company.
The committee member secretary Anu Muhammad and leaders – BD Rahmatullah, Tanjim Uddin Khan, Kallol Mostafa, Tipu Biswas, Sardar Ruhin Hossain Prince and Shubhrangsu Chakrabarty also spoke.
