Police arrested 11 BNP activists from different areas in the capital on Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, in separate incidents on charges of their alleged involvement in trying to buy votes in favour of BNP-supported candidates.
Police also recovered a total of Tk 3.77 lakh from them.
Paltan thana police arrested Shantinagar kitchen market Juba Dal unit president Abu Sufian and a member of Laxmipur district Jamaat member Abu Taleb from Paltan area at about 3:00 pm.
Officer-in-charge of Paltan Police station Morshed Alam said they were arrested on charges of trying to buy votes in favour of BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka South CC Mirza Abbas.
Police recovered Tk 27,000 from their possession, the OC added.
A team of Mirpur Thana police arrested BNP activist Sharmin Akhtar along with her 5 associates from Ahmednagar of Pikepara under the police station in the city on charges of trying to buy votes on Tuesday.
Police recovered Tk 3 lakh from Sharmin’s possession.
Officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station Salahuddin said the six arrested individuals were trying to buy votes in return for money in favour of BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North CC Tabith Awal at about 1:40 pm.
Earlier on Monday night, Hazaribagh thana police arrested Hazaribagh thana Jubo Dal unit vice-president Alauddin from Ganaktoli area, Ramna thana police arrested BNP activist Masud from Challish Ghar slum area and Khilkhet thana police arrested another BNP activist Firoz Miah from Maddhyapara area in separate incidents.
Sources at the DMP headquarters said they were arrested on charges of trying to buy votes in favour of BNP-supported councilor candidates in their respective areas.
Police also recovered a total of Tk 50,500 from the possession of arrested Jubo Dal leader and BNP activists.
