Inqilab reporter Atiq remanded; two others sent to jail

Staff Correspondent:   A Dhaka court on Monday granted two day remand for detained Bangla daily Inqilab’s reporter Ahmmed Atiq and sent two other journalists to jail for a report published in the daily.   Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Ashikur Rahman passed the order after hearing separate remand and bail plea petitions. Rejecting the bail pleas for Inqilab News Editor Rabiulla Ulla Robi and Deputy Chief Reporter Rafiq Mohammad and sent them to prison.   Police had sought five days to grill in custody reporter Ahmmed Atiq. Defense lawyer Syed Ahmed Gazi had pleaded for bail for the three Inqilab employees. The judge passed the order after hearing.   Earlier on January 16 police arrested the three journalists for a “fabricated” report regarding the presence of Indian military inside Bangladesh territory.   The foreign ministry slammed the news as baseless and fabricated. Later, the daily had apologized for producing the information.   The three were shown arrested in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act 2006. The press of daily Inqilab was sealed off and seized some materials including computers.
