Abdullah Mohammad Hossain Tanvir, a final year student of Medicine at Ibn Sina Medical College, Dhaka was arrested today in the afternoon from in front of his campus. He had just completed his final viva exam and was leaving the hall at the time of his arrest. According to witnesses he was arrested by the Civil team of Mirpur Police Station. However, police denied any incident of such arrest.
Sources said, Officer in Charge of Mirpur police station, Salahuddin, has just sneaked him out of the police station, covering Tanvir with a veil, and took him to an unknown destination. It is rumored that, he is going to be killed in 2-3 hours in the name of so called “crossfire”.
His family, friends, teachers and associates have expressed fears for Tanvir’s life, calling for police to release him. Extrajudicial executions in police custody in the name of “crossfire” or “gunfight” killings have seen a spike in recent weeks. 29 opposition people, mostly students, have been killed in this manner since January 5 2015. Tanvir is an opposition student at Ibn Sina Medical College.
