A Dhaka court on Sunday framed charges against 21 activists of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL), the student wing of ruling Awami League, in connection with the sensational killing of Biswajit Das in the capital during a opposition road blockade program in December last year.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Zahirul Haque passed the order for starting the trial on June 13.
The court also rejected the petitions of five accused seeking discharge from the case and the bail petitions of three accused.
Earlier, on April 2, the court took cognisance of charges against the 21 activists of Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) in the case.
Inspector Mohammad Tajul Islam of Detective Branch (DB) Police submitted the charge sheet before the court on March 5 in connection with the killing of Biswajit Das, 22, a tailor. Sixty people were named as witnesses in the charge sheet.
The seven charge-sheeted accused, now in custody, are Rafiqul Islam Shakil, Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Emdadul Haque Emdad, GM Rasheduzzaman Shawon, AHM Kibria, Saiful Islam and Qaiyum Miah Tipu.
The fugitives are Rajon Talukder, Khandaker M Yunus Ali, Tariqur Bin Johar Tomal, Golam Mostafa, M Alauddin, Obaidul Quader Tahsin, Imran Hossain Imran, Azizur Rahman Aziz, Al-Amin Sheikh, M Rafiqul Islam, Nur-e-Alam Limon, Monirul Haque Pavel, Quamrul Hasan and Mosharraf Hossain.
Biswajit Das was chopped to death by the BCL workers near the Bahadur Shah Park (formerly Victoria Park) in the old city during the opposition’s countrywide road blockade programme on December 9 last year.
