An engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) was assaulted allegedly by activists of the ruling Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies in Digholia upazila on Monday following an altercation over tender submission for construction works in six unions of the upazila.
Sources said the incident ensued as Executive Engineer M Robiul Islam of the upazila LGED office had an altercation with some activists of the AL, its youth front Jubo League and student front Bangladesh Chhatra League at noon as they went to submit tender documents of construction works of some roads and drains after the deadline for this ended at 12:00pm.
At one stage, they assaulted Robiul Islam.
On information, officials of the local administration along with police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Contacted, Digholia upazila Jubo League leader Sheikh Monirul Islam denied the allegation of assaulting the engineer.
But an altercation took place between them, he said.
Previously, on January 25, a tender worth Tk 50.98 lakh of 25 groups was called to construct roads and drains in Digholia, Arongghata, Jogipole, Barackpur, Senhati and Gazirhat unions of the upazila under ADP and UDF.
