A student was killed when police opened fire upon a demonstration by Jamaat-e-Islami and Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir activists at Maizdi, Noakhali. Several other activists are reported to have been injured from the incident of police firing. According to news reports, a demonstration was brought out by activists at the said area during the afternoon in protest of the rejection of the review petition submitted by the defence team and the upholding of the death sentence by the appellate division of the Supreme Court. At this time, Omar Farooq, a young student, was fatally injured after being hit when police opened fire upon the demonstrators.
Eyewitnesses stated that activists of Jamaat and Shibir brought out a procession at around 11 am local time at the main road in front of Mofiz Plaza at Maizdi. Police fired upon the demonstrators as soon as they began their march. Omar Farooq was hit by a bullet in the head, which left him critically injured. Police left the injured Farooq lying in the roadside drain, from where he was rushed to Noakhali Medical College Hospital, where on duty doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-charge of Sudharam Model Police Station Anwar Hossain said a group of Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession in the area around 10:45 am protesting the Supreme Court’s rejection of death-row war crimes convict Kamaruzzaman’s review petition against its previous verdict in favour of his death penalty that was earlier awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2). As police tried to disperse them, a chase and counter-chase took place between the Jamaat-Shibir activists and the law enforcers, triggering a clash. At one stage, the Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire targeting the law enforcers, forcing them to retaliate, which left Shibir activist Rakib injured.
The police officer further said that another Shibir activist named Omar Farooq was injured in the clashes, after which he fell into a roadside drain. Later, Omar Farooq was rushed to Noakhali General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Injured Rakib was also admitted to the hospital in police custody.
