BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged the ban on holding rally in the capital was imposed to thwart the mass upsurge. “The government itself cannot keep confidence in the prime minister’s speech. So they imposed the ban on gatherings,” said the BNP spokesperson while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club in the afternoon. The government has pushed the country towards an uncertainty and confrontation, Dhaka city unit BNP Member Secretary Abdus Salam told Dhaka Tribune moments after Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced restriction measures on Saturday. “The government must take responsibility if any untoward situation arises from this,” he added. Moments earlier, police announced restriction measures banning any forms of rally or gathering in the capital from Sunday 6am. The order will be in effect until further notice. The BNP had called for a rally on October 25. They were determined to hold the rally and had warned an armed resistance towards any obstruction to this regard.
