Shushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan), a rights body, on Saturday urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to engage in dialogue to beak the present political standoff over a fresh national election.
“The initiative has to come first from the Prime Minister in this regard as she runs the country,“ said Sujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
Citing past experiences, he said there must be a fruitful dialogue. “We don’t want to see any game over the dialogue.”
If the political leaders fail to resolve the prevailing political stalemate, Majumder said, the President has to take the initiative in the interest of the country.
About the election, he said it is important to arrange a free, fair, impartial and competitive election at the quickest possible of time for the ‘stability’ of the country.
Expressing concern over the current political movement, the Sujan secretary said the country might brace for a violent situation in the future if the government does not arrange a fresh election.
Majumder also urged all the political parties to come forward for a solution to some issues to avoid the present violent scenario and future uncertainty.
Former Chittagong University teacher Dr Tofail Ahmed was also present at the press conference.
