Shibir activist killed in police firing in Chuadanga: Hartal in 4 Khulna dists Sunday
An activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir was killed in police firing during a clash with cops at Darshana in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga district on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 20, son of Delwar Hossain of Boalia village under Sadar upazila.
The police action also left two more activists injured. One of them was identified as Abdullah but identity of another injured could not be known.
Meanwhile, Shibir Thursday afternoon called a half-day hartal in four districts of Khulna division for Sunday protesting the killing of Rafiqul in police firing.
The organization will enforce the shutdown in Chuadanga, Jhenidah, Meherpur and Kushtia districts from 6am to 2pm.
Local Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists brought out a procession at Darshana Railway Bazar around 3 pm as part of their central programme demanding release of all Jamaat-Shibir leaders, including Shibir president Delwar Hossain before Eid-ul-Azha.
Witnesses said the clash erupted when police obstructed the procession and chased the processionists.
After being chased, the Shibir men retaliated hurling brick chips at police, triggering a clash.
At one stage of chase and counter chase, police opened fire on the Shibir activists, leaving Rafiqul dead on the spot and two other Shibir men injured.
Later, Shibir announced the hartal protesting the killing of Rafiqul. Assistant secretary of district Jamaat Ruhul Amin confirmed the shutdown.
