Dhaka (RTNN): The Supreme Court on Tuesday will deliver the verdict on Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah appeals against International Crimes Tribunal’s (ICT) verdict that jailed him for life.
On February 5, ICT-2 sentenced Quader Mollah to life term imprisonment for his involvement in crimes against humanity during Liberation War in 1971.
Later, on March 4, Mollah filed an appeal with the Supreme Court seeking acquittal of the charges brought against him and also repeal of the tribunal verdict.
Earlier, on March 3, the state prosecutors filed the appeal petition seeking capital punishment of Quader Mollah.
Keeping pending the verdict for 55 days after closing the hearings on the appeals, the five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain set the date for pronouncing the final judgment.
The four other members of the bench are Justices SK Sinha, M Abdul Wahhab Miah, Syed Mahmud Hossain and AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.
The matter will come up on Tuesday’s cause list as item no. 1 for announcement of judgment.
On July 23, after exhausting 39 working days, the apex court wrapped up the hearings on both the appeals and kept waiting for the verdict to be delivered any day.
Lifer Quader Mollah through his counsel filed appeal against the ICT judgment seeking acquittal on all charges, while the government submitted an appeal seeking death penalty for Mollah for each of the six charges brought against him.
Convicting detained Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah on five counts of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, the International Crimes Tribunnal-2 unanimously sentenced him to life term imprisonment.
