Motor traffic on the road connecting Mohakhali with Gulshan-1 intersection remained suspended for about half an hour.

Police later fired rubber bullets to control the situation.

Gulshan police Deputy Commissioner Mustaq Ahmed Khan said they were trying to find out what sparked the violence.

Witnesses said a group of BCL activists assembled in front of the main entrance of the college around 2:15pm and began shouting slogans.

The group of more than 50 activists started indiscriminately smashing vehicles on the main street.

It panicked the people and halted traffic, witnesses said.

After the vandalism, a BCL faction took position at the college premises and another at the lane opposite the college.

bdnews24.com correspondent reported both the groups were shouting ‘Joy Bangla and Joy Bangabandhu’.

Several activists were seen rushing to the gate from the college premises holding lethal weapons.

The situation became normal after police fired rubber bullets.

The BCL’s college unit President Kazi Mirazul Islam Dollar told bdnews24.com the Awami League’s labour front Sramik League President Delwar Hossain’s supporter ‘Rabbi’ beat up ‘Sunny’ in the morning.

Students of his group also slapped Rabbi at that time.

He said his group later tried to reach a solution but was beaten up by the opponents.

“(Our boys) vandalised several vehicles in a fit of rage,” he said.
