Piash Karim, an economics and social sciences department professor of BRAC University and political analyst, died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital early Monday. He was declared dead at around 5:30am in Square Hospitals Limited, said his cousin Iqbal Choudhury. Piash, 56, left his wife and a son to mourn his death. Iqbal said that Paish was feeling unwell since Sunday evening and his health condition deteriorated at around 4:00am. He was rushed to the hospital in an unconscious condition. His body was kept at the hospital mortuary. The body will be taken to Central Shaheed Minar on Wednesday for his well-wishers to pay respect and his namaz-e-janaza will be held at Baitul Mokkaram Mosque in the afternoon, Iqbal said. Iqbal, however, said that they were yet to decide where Piash will be buried. Piash was born in Comilla in 1958. He got his bachelor degree from Dhaka University. He also obtained his PhD degree from Kansas State University in USA. He returned the country in 2006 and later joined BRAC University. Civil society members rushed to the hospital immediately after knowing the news and expressed their deep condolence. BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed their deep condolences at Piash Karim’s death.
