Police move court to remand Magura Chhatra League leader Suman over shooting baby in mother’s womb
Police have pleaded with a court for taking one of the prime accused in custody for questioning over a shooting that killed one person and wounded a mother and the baby in her womb in Magura.
RAB arrested Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Magura unit Vice-President Sen Suman in Dhaka on Sunday.
A Magura court set Aug 9 for hearing the police plea made on Tuesday.
Magura Detective Branch OC Imaul Haque said they pleaded for 10-day remand for Suman after presenting three of the accused before court.
The court sent the trio to jail after setting the hearing date, he said.
The shooting on July 23 occurred at Magura town’s Doarparha when supporters of Magura Juba League activist Kamrul Bhuiyan engaged former Juba League supporters Mohammad Ali and ‘Ajibor’ in a fight to gain control of the area.
Najma Begum, who was 34 weeks into her pregnancy, was shot by a stray bullet during the clash. The bullet had also injured the baby in her womb.
The shooting also left a man killed and another injured.
Two days after she was born through surgery that night, the baby girl was transferred to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital say the child was making remarkable recovery, but was yet to be fully out of danger.
The family of the deceased man lodged the murder case accusing Suman and 15 others on July 26.
