Police arrested ex-MP, Mr Syed Qaiser, from Apollo Hospital’s Cardiac Care Unit in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Thursday May 16. The arrest follows a warrant issued by International Crimes Tribunal-2 on May 15 on allegations of participation in crimes against humanity during the 1971 war.
While initial news reports suggested the arrest took place at American Center, sources close to the case state that Mr Qaiser was in fact arrested while admitted in hospital and undergoing cardiac treatment. He suffers from heart related complications and is currently in need of constant care. Doctors refused to release him due to his condition, despite police wishes to take him away immediately. The police are keeping watch outside his room and hospital as they await. As he is now in police custody in hospital, no visitors are permitted.
Mr Syed Qaisar was a State Minister for Agriculture in 1989. He also served as MP in 1979.
