Jahangirnagar University Professor Anu Muhammad on Friday said, “The law enforcers agencies including Dhaka university administration is fueling the sexual offenders as the officials is reluctant to expose the authentic footage report and the police are yet to arrest anyone involved in the sexual harassment to the women during the Pahela Boishakh celebration”.
“Proctor of university level is as like as the State Home Affairs Minister as both of them saves the culprits, which fuels the criminal activities in widely”, he added.
The comments came up while the prominent economist was addressing a solidarity rally against the sexual harassment at Razu Sculpture of Dhaka University.
Bangladesh Chhatra union DU unit President Liton Nandi said, “They (admin) had been observing the 2 hours long CCTV footage for three days, how ridiculous!”
He said their group caught five of the offenders from near spot and handed them over to Sahbag thana SI Ashraf the police. When they inquired about them two hours later, police told them that all of them had been released.
“When we sought help from a few policemen standing 20 yards from the spot, they said that the area was beyond their jurisdiction”, he added.
He said that we had informed DU proctor professor M Amzad Ali instantly but he did not come at the spot to save the women but said “I could not do anything if I come here’
He threatened for conducting tougher movements unless the DU proctor Amzad Ali resigned soon.
Expressing concern over the rising incidents of sexual assaults, Chhtra Union general secretary Lucky Akhter that the women are being assaulted in many parts of the country by an influential youth as the police do not arrest them.
She presented six-point demands including the immediate resignation of DU proctor Amzad Ali, exemplary punishment to the sexual offenders and the irresponsible police, total security of DU campus, formation of National rules against sexual harassment and the security of women inside and outside of the residents.
She declared the further activities that included, Press conference at Madhur Canteen on 18 April at 12 pm, countrywide demonstration on 19 April, and long Human chain from Aparajeyo Bangla to Karzan hall on 20 April at 11 am and On 21 April submission of memorandum to Home Ministry.
Dhaka North City Corporation polls mayoral candidate Abdullah Al Kafee said, “When Dhaka city will be safe for women, then everyone will be safe here”.
DU VC has been acting as the Dalal (broker) of ruling party Awami League and saving the culprits by creating barrage to publish the photos of the incidents.
“If those culprits are not arrested soon, I will go on a sit-in strike in front of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police office on Saturday.” He declared.
Naribarta Editor Kamal Lohani said, “It is astonishing that DU and law enforcers are still silent or not doing satisfactory development to find out criminals in the incident”.
The speakers in the rally blamed the reluctance of DU authorities and on-duty police forces on the day at TSC for the incidents and for failing to bring them to book immediately.
Leftist student organizations, women rights organizations, rights activists and leaders of different political parties threatened police and DU authorities to conduct tougher movements if the culprits are not traced out immediately.
Among others the program was also addressed by Bangladesh Communist party president Muzahidul Islam Selim, Socialist Labour Front general secretary Razequzzaman Ratan, BCU President Hasan Tarek, Singer Sayan and number of media celebrities.
When contacted DU acting proctor Prof Amzad said, “There were many outsiders at DU on the day and police were also asked to boost security measures to control them but they did not do so as per pre-plan”.
When contacted, Shabagh police station officer in charge Sirajul Islam told, “They (Student leaders) have no any proof such incidents, even after watching the CCTV footage we saw Laton nandi wearing Panjabi whereas he was talking about taking off his dress to the victim women”.
On the contrary, a high official of police Ramna division seeking anonymity told that “It was seen in CCTV Footage that four to five youths were trying to take off clothes of a woman while one or two came forward to save her”.
Earlier on Wednesday the leftist Student body at a press conference issued seven days ultimatum to arrest offenders and threatened to conduct tougher movement on the campus after expiration of date.
Witness said that the incidents of sexual harassment took place between 5pm and 7:30pm in presence of law enforcers and many ordinary people who thronged Shahbagh and DU area in Pahela Boishakh celebration.
