Mass arrests throughout Bangladesh; 39 BNP, Jamaat and Shibir activists arrested in latest drive

In security raids in 8 districts throughout Bangladesh, 39 activists were arrested from BNP and Jamaat-Shibir, including an ex-MP.

According to police, these raids were carried out on Saturday night and throughout Sunday to catch those accused in various vandalism cases. Among the accused is the alleged killer of the Assistant Superintendent (ASI) Ibrahim Miah of Darussalam police station of Dhaka in a knife attack, who was absconding after the incident.

Dhaka:

Security forces arrested Dewan Muhammad Salahuddin, ex-member of Parliament and Dhaka District BNP vice-president from Pirbag in the capital and Refat Ullah, Savar Corporation Mayor from Ulail in Savar. Before that, on Saturday, police arrested 5 activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir from a house in Shahibag Moholla in Savar town area. Police stated that there were 13 cases registered against Dewan Salahuddin in Savar and Ashulia police stations.

Rajshahi:

Police arrested Rajshahi City Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Professor Abul Hashem at 8 pm on Saturday night from his own residence at Binodpur in the city. Rajshahi city police spokesperson and intelligence branch assistant commissioner Sushant Chandra Roy said that police arrested Abul Hashem on charges of being involved in Rajshahi Boalia thana attack on police and arson attacks on vehicles. He was shown arrested on Sunday afternoon.

Naogaon:

Four activists of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, along with municipal Jamaat-e-islami Ameer Hossain Ahmed Mujahid (50) were arrested by Detective branch of police. Police stated that they had recovered a big quantity of books, leaflets, banners, and other ‘jihadi’ literature pertaining to the call to release war crimes accused Jamaat-e-islami leader Ali Ahsan Mujahid. A case had been listed against them at Naogaon Sadar police station.

Bogura:

In police raids, 17 activists were arrested, including 13 activists of Jamaat-Shibir along with Shahjahanpur upazila Jamaat secretary and 4 activists of Jubo Dal. Among the arrested activists, 6 are from Bogura City, 5 are from Shahjahanpur and 4 are from Adamdighi.

Before this, on the charges of being allegedly involved in the stabbing of police ASI Ibrahim Miah, 25 activists were arrested from Bogura on Friday including 2 BNP-Jamaat affiliated chairmen. Among them, 21 students were arrested by police from a student mess. Police superintendent Mohammad Asaduzzaman claimed that all the arrested 21 students were activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir.

Gaibanda:

Police arrested district Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Abdur Rahim Sarkar late in the night on Saturday. According to police sources, there are several cases against him for vandalism including a petrol bomb attack on a bus at Tulshighaat area of the Gaibanda Upazila on 6 February. Police raided his house situated near Rabeya clinic beside the city bus stand on Saturday night at half past one and arrested him. He was sent to jail following a court appearance on Sunday.

Mirzapur:

Police arrested Mohammad Abul Kashem Mridha, the ex-president of Mirzapur upazila Chhatra Shibir. However, police gave no reason for his arrest.

Shonagazi (Feni):

Police on Sunday arrested Nasiruddin alias Mister(35), the upazila BNP publicity secretary. Shonagazi Model thana Officer in Charge (O.C.) Harun-Ur Rashid confirmed the arrest of Mister, who was accused and absconding in 4 police cases against him. The OC also confirmed that he had been sent to jail after a court appearance in front of a judge at Feni judge court.

Cox’s Bazar:

Police raided a restaurant at Cox’s Bazar and arrested 6 activists of Chhatra Shibir. Of the arrested, 5 are students of Cox’s Bazar Government Medical College.

Raipur:

A court in Raipur sent 15 activists of upazila BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal to jail. They were shown arrested in two cases of vandalism and were denied any bail when they prayed for the same in front of Lakshmipur District and Judge Mir Akhtar Hossain, who gave the order to send them to jail.
