Chittagong Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested four persons including a Jubo League leader on charge of killing the night guard of Al Arafah Islami Bank’s Muradpur Branch.

A gang of robbers killed the night guard as they attempted to rob the bank on the night of May 07.

The four arrestees are Gias, a Jubo League leader of the city’s Kotwali area and his cohorts Mahbub, Arif and Sagor.

Arif and Gias were arrested from the city’s Bakalia area on May 12th while Sagor and Mahbub from Ostogram area of Kishorgonj district on May 13th night, says a source in the CMP.

Another accused Masud, also the follower of Gias, is still on the run.

DB Additional Deputy Commissioner Tanvir Arafat, also the spokesman of the CMP, not mentioning the specific number of the arrestees, said they had arrested some people and would brief the development at a press conference today.

Besides, CMP Commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal, in a phone conversation with the Dhaka Tribune yesterday afternoon, said they had some updates which would be disclosed within one or two days.

Several officials of the CMP, seeking anonymity, said Gias who was the mastermind of the robbery attempt is a follower of a leader of the city unit of Awami League.

The accused backed by the ruling party earned notoriety in Kotwali, Dewanbazar, Bakalia, Bogar Bill and adjoining areas for their criminal acts, they said.

On May 7, the five identified by the CCTV footage of the bank attempted to rob the bank after they killed the night guard Md Ibrahim.

Panchlaish police the next morning recovered the dead body of the night guard before they made an abortive attempt to break open the lock of the bank’s vault.

The bank’s senior officer Ali Newaj lodged a case with Panchlaish Police Station on May 9 accusing three to four unidentified persons and the investigation was handed over to DB police the same day.

All the arrestees are now under DB police custody while absconding Masud slipped into Comilla after the incident, said a source in the DB police.

Mahbub, Masud and Sagor were directly involved in the murder while Gias chalked out the entire robbery plan and Arif provided them shelter in his residence, said DB sources.

According to the CCTV footage and the information gleaned from the robbers, Mahbub, Masud and Sagor on May 7 midnight entered into the bank breaking the window of the bank’s rear portion while Gias took position outside of the bank.

The victim Ibrahim was sleeping in front of the cash section of the bank. Masud at first struck his head with a brick with Masud and Mahbub pinning him down while Sagor slashed his throat.

Later, Sagor took Ibrahim’s mobile phone set and tried to break open the volt of the bank but they failed to do so and went out after a 40-minute failed mission.
