RTNN News Desk: A local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader, who was arrested on charge of carrying out subversive activities during the ongoing blockade, was killed in an alleged shootout with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Kansat area of the district’s Shibganj upazila early Friday.
The deceased was identified as Matiur Rahman, 22, vice president of Shyampur union JCD and son of Anusak Ali alias Montu Mia of Bazitpur village.
Protesting the killing, local BNP called a 48-hour hartal in the district starting 6:00am on Sunday.
RAB-5 camp commanding officer Maj Kamruzzaman said RAB men arrested Matiur along with Hazrat Ali, 18, and Shyamol, 18, on charge of picketing, torching vehicles and exploding crude bombs during the 20-party alliance-enforced blockade on Thursday afternoon.
Later, the RAB members conducted a drive in Kansat area along with Matiur to recover arms around 3:30am.
Sensing the presence of RAB members, cohorts of Matiur opened fire on the elite force, triggering a gunfight, where the victim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.
RAB members recovered one pistol, one revolver, two LG guns, two shutter guns, 17 crude bombs, 10 petrol bombs and five bullets from the spot.
