Police have dispersed a flash procession by Jamaat-e-Islami supporters at Dhaka’s Badda area after a court verdict on their leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.
Sayadee ’s death penalty was watered down to ‘imprisonment until death’ on Wednesday by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
“Police blank-fired in air and dispersed them.” Three people have been arrested and more policemen have been deployed in the area.
Jamaat announced a 48-hour strike for Thursday and Sunday hours after the verdict on Sayedee .
They have also scheduled prayers on Friday and country-wide agitation on Saturday to press for Sayadee’s accquital.
The first war crimes tribunal had sentenced Sayedee to death for two charges of murder and arson on Feb 28, 2013.
In the days following that verdict, 70 people including policemen lost their lives in the violence. At least 200 others were injured and attacks were carried out on Hindus.
