Jamaat leader killed in gunfight in Meherpur

Staff Correspondent:   A local leader of Jamaat-E-Islami was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Bandar village in Shashan ghat area of Sadar Upazila early Monday.   Deceased Tarique Mohammad Saiful Islam was son of Sameer Uddin and was assistant secretary of Meherpur district unit Jamaat.   Officer in Charge of Meherpur Police Station Reazul Islam said Tarique was arrested from an Islami Bank branch in the town on Sunday afternoon. Later, police along with Tarique conducted a drive in the area at about 2:30am on Monday to arrest Abdul Matin, a Khulna district unit leader of Jamaat.   Sensing the presence of police, a group of Jamaat-Shibir activists fired gunshots at the law enforcers, triggering a gunfight that left Tarique injured with bullets. Severely injured, Tarique was rushed to Meherpur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead at 2:45am.   Denying allegations from the law enforcers the local Jamaat leaders claimed the incident as planned murder. They said police fired Tarique only for involvement with Jamaat’s politics.   Police sources said Tarique had several cases filed against him for tree felling in the area and obstructing police from performing duty during the opposition’s recent hartal and blockade programs.
