A leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been killed in the capital on Sunday afternoon.
Abul Ala Mohammad Iqbal, the deceased, was the Ameer of the of the organization’s Tejgaon industrial zone area. He was also one of the members of the party’s Majlish-e-Shura, the highest policy discussion body of the party.
The party website released that the Jamaat leader led a procession supporting Monday’s strike at Mohakhali area. “While he was returning from the procession, police chased him and arrested. He got severely sick in police custody. Later police released him and people took him to Metropolitan hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead”, read the website release of the party.
It also termed the deceased leader as ‘martyr’.
However, Officer in Charge of Tejgaon Industrial zone area Mahmudul Hasan told news media that they arrested one person during the noon and later he was released.
“We don’t know what has happened to him”, he said.
General Secretary of Dhaka City north unit of Shibir Faisal has informed reporters that Abul Ala Iqbal was arrested in the noon and taken to Mohakhali police box.
“When he was released, some young people attacked on him and hacked him severely. They left him terribly bleeding”, he said.
