Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu expects death penalty against war criminals to be implemented by August.
Inu stated while addressing a discussion at his Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) office in the city, “Appeal will end by June. So the punishment will be meted out by July or August.”
“No conspiracy of Khaleda Zia [BNP Chairperson] will be fruitful against the trial of war criminals. The verdicts will be executed after legal procedures,” the Information Minister stated.
“By July-August we will prove whose country it is, whether Bangladesh belongs to Freedom Fighters or Rajakars (collaborators of Pakistan).”
The minister also said it’s the high time to ban Jamaat-Shibir politics. He hoped the government would be strict to award capital punishments to war criminals.
The International Crimes Tribunal has already awarded death penalty to three — two of them top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Mohammad Kamaruzzaman.
The third is a former Jamaat member Abul Kalam Azad who is absconding and was tried in absentia.
Among others, JSD General Secretary Sharif Nurul Ambia and Joint Secretary Nazmul Haque, spoke at the programme.
