Amid the 20-party’s non-stop countrywide blockade programme, Dhaka district unit BNP on Sunday called a daylong hartal in five upazilas of the district for Monday protesting the ‘confinement’ of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to her office.
A press release, signed by Dhaka district BNP president Abdul Mannan and general secretary Amanullah Aman, said the shutdown programme is also meant for protesting the countrywide killing and arrest of leaders and activists of the party.
The five upazilas are Dohar, Nawabganj, Dhamrai, Keraniganj and Savar.
According to the press release, Dhaka district BNP called the hartal in favour of the 20-party Dhaka district unit.
Earlier, BNP’s student body Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal also called a daylong hartal for Monday in Dhaka and its 13 other adjoining districts on the same grounds.
A press release signed by JCD office secretary Abdus Sattar Patwary said the hartal will be effective in Dhaka, Narsingdi, Narayanganj district and city, Gazipur, Tangail, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Comilla south and north, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, Sherpur, Jamalpur and Netrakona districts.
JCD president Raiib Ahsan and general secretary Akramul Hasan urged the JCD leaders concerned to make the hartal programme a success.
Having failed to come out of her Gulshan office to join a planned rally of the 20-party alliance in the city to mark “Democracy Killing Day” on January 5, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia enforced the blockade for an indefinite period.
