Garment worker’s demo leading factory shutdown for 5th consecutive day

Garment workers staged demonstration on Wednesday morning for the fifth consecutive day demanding the minimum wage to be raised at TK 8000.

More than one hundred factories are reported to have been declared closed at Kaliakoir Upzila of Gazipur district amid vandalism and processions.

Eyewitnesses and police sources said, factory workers started their work on scheduled time at 8 am. However, workers from several factories including Nayagra Textile and Mahmud Jeans of Chandra area of the Kaliakoir Upzila left the factory and staged demonstration over their demand for minimum salary.

Soon after, workers from the nearby factories joined the demonstrations and chanted slogan. They seized traffic movement at the Dhaka-Tangail highway at Shafipur bazar.

The agitated workers vandalized Maks Sweater factory, Mim-Noon Knitwear Ltd at Sinabah area.

The agitated workers however moved away from the highway due to downpour.

Officer in Charge of Kaliakoir police station Omar Faruq confirmed about the factory closure.

He also said additional forces have been deployed in the spot to avoid further incidents.
