Food stall owners observe strike at JU

Food and tea stall owners of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Sunday observed strike on the campus protesting the attack on a mini tea stall owner by a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader.

Demanding the immediate trial and investigation, a 21 mini food and tea stall owners of Bot-Tola under Moulana Bhashini hall handed over a memorandum to the proctor of the university around 10:30 am.

Protesting the attack, they also closed their stalls that caused the sever food problem of general students of the university.

The owners claimed that “Some BCL leaders used to take meals without payment, if we urge them to pay the dues, they (BCL leaders) threaten us to shut down our business and torture us”.

JU Proctor Prof.Tapan Kumar Saha said “Necessary steps would be taken after investigation”.

Earlier, Chhatra league organising secretary of A.F.M Kamal Uddin Hall unit beat up a tea stall owner Nahid on Saturday. Witnesses said Siddiqur Rahman Pratyai, a fourth year student of English, beat up Nahid with a stick as he refused to give him cigarette for free. Nahid was rushed to the university medical center. Nahid said, ‘I can’t run business as a group of BCL senior and junior leaders and activists, led by Pratyai of Kamal Uddin Hall, used to take tea and cigarette without payment.
