Ex-Communication minister’s ownership of telecom companies: questions raised

Former communications Minister Syed Abul Hossain and long term close friend Singapore businessman M Bodiuzzaman’s family have investments in two companies named Visiontel LTD and Cloudtel LTD. Questions are being raised from several government departments about the source of that money.

National Board of Revenue (NBR) sources state that Bodiuzzaman reported taxable income of 1,430,000 taka in the 2010-2011 financial year. The same year, he paid 33,393 taka in income taxes. Many have raised the question of how he and his family became the majority shareholder of a telecom company within one year? How is he expressing the desire to acquire half ownership of another telecom company? Where did he get such money? Is there someone investing in the name of Bodiuzzaman?

Visiontel was registered as a company in October of 2011. CLoudtel was registered in November of the same year. However, Visiontel obtained International Gateway (IGW) licence in April of 2012. Around the same time, Cloudtel obtain Interconnection Exchange (ICX) licence. All international calls into and out of the country go through IGW and ICX.
