The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday warned a defence lawyer representing war crimes accused Mahidur Rahman and Afsar Hossain Chutu of not intimidating the tribunal.
The warning came as defence lawyer, Md Abdus Sobhan Tarafder, in the end of his closing arguments sought acquittal of his client because, ‘critics at home and abroad say the tribunal awards “death sentence” and “imprisonment until death.” Such an acquittal would prove that the tribunal also acquits accused persons.’
‘Don’t refer us to any foreign critics. Don’t try to intimidate us…we care little about such threats,’ the presiding judge, Justice Obaidul Hassan said.
He reminded the defence lawyer that the judiciary in Bangladesh is very strong and independent.
The tribunal chairman said that one can go to the Supreme Court challenging the ICT verdict which is unprecedented in the world.
