On the 28th of October, 2006, armed Awami League cadres and activists, many of them armed with traditional logi-boitha (long oar) sticks, on the directives of senior Awami League leaders, attacked and clashed with a rally of Jamaat-e-Islami in Paltan area of the capital, killing several Jamaat activists in a series of grisly street killings that were televised live throughout national television. Although families of the victims have long demanded a proper investigation to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice, they say that the current Awami League administration continues to give shelter to the killers and prevent the course of justice for the October 28 political violence killings.
