A mob beat a Chhatra League leader to death in Chittagong’s Tiger Pass Malipara area on Thursday night.

Police recovered the body of Md Saddam on Thursday night.

The 35-year-old was beaten to death over intra-party feud, Chittagong Metropolitan Police additional deputy commissioner Paritosh Ghosh quoted locals as saying.

ADC Paritosh said Saddam was a member of Banganbandhu Sriti Sangsad, a club set up near a temple in Malipara some three to four months back.

However, locals who were interviewed on the incident had a different story to tell.

“Members of the club have been harassing locals and even threatened them with eviction for grabbing a government land.”

Alak Kanti Das, a Malipara resident, said locals chased some 10-12 masked young men who attacked the temple on Thursday evening.

“They captured one of the attackers and beat them to death. He was identified as Saddam after his mask was taken off.

“Saddam and several others demanded toll from the temple’s Puja committee during the last Saraswati Puja, prompting the committee to file a general diary with Khulshi Police Station.”

ADC Paritosh however said that police were now trying to nab those responsible for Saddam’s death.
