BNP’s hartal passing off peacefully

Dhaka, BdChronicle:

The daylong nationwide hartal, excluding Dhaka and Chittagong cities, enforced by the BNP in protest against the attack on its chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade at the city’s Karwanbazar on Monday, is going on peacefully today (Wednesday).

No picketing by the party activists was seen anywhere in the city as of filing this report at 9:00am.

Vehicular movement on the roads in the cities and towns was almost normal in the morning.

A large number of policemen remained deployed in the city to fend off any trouble.

BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the shutdown programme at an emergency press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.

Moudud told journalists that the attack was made on Khaleda Zia’s motorcade during her election campaign in a deliberate attempt to kill her.

Khaleda’s motorcade came under an attack by miscreants during her electioneering in the city’s Karwanbazar area in favour of her party-backed Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral candidate Tabith Awal, leaving three people injured.
