A BNP man was killed and 14 people were injured as law enforcers opened fire on a procession of the BNP-led 20-party alliance at Kansat Bazar in Shibganj upazila on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Jamsed Ali, 40, an activist of local BNP and son of Mantaj Ali of Shibnagar village in the upazila.
Witnesses said the alliance activists brought out a procession in the bazaar around 3pm marking what they say the “Democracy Killing Day”.
However, a joint team of police and members of Border Guard Bangladesh, led by a magistrate, obstructed the procession.
Being resisted, the activists threw several crude bombs at the law enforcers that triggered a clash.
At one stage of a chase and counter-chase, the lawmen opened fire on the 20-party activists, leaving 15 people injured.
Of the injured, Jamsed succumbed to his injuries on the way to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Meanwhile, local BNP called a daylong hartal in the district for Tuesday protesting the killing of its activist.
BNP organising secretary for Rajshahi division Harunur Rashid announced the shutdown programme.
Additional police super Al Mamun confirmed the clash, but he denied the allegation of the death of the BNP man in firing by the law enforcers.
