The members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) carrying ‘lethal weapons’ during their patrols in a number of districts to tackle blockaders will only fire shots in self-defence, said its director general Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed on Thursday.
“BGB carries lethal weapons, but they won’t fire shots on anyone. If someone launches any attack, BGB members can open fire in self-defence,” the BGB chief told a media briefing at Pilkhana.
Maj Gen Aziz came up with the BG stance when asked by reporters about the undertakings of the border force during their patrols amid the countrywide non-stop blockade enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
If someone carries bombs or petrol bombs, it can lead to the death of five people, and, if such a scene comes into the sight of any BGB
member, it is his responsibility to counteract, he added.
Maj Gen Aziz noted that about 80-85 platoons of BGB have been on a round-the-clock patrol to fend off troubles in 16-17 districts amid the blockade while 75-80 more platoons have been kept standby.
Noting that officials from 30-35 district administrations have requested the BGB deployment, he said, “We’ve already contacted the officials concerned and assured them that the forces will be deployed when needed.”
