BGB firing kills 2 in Dinajpur

Two people were killed and at least two others injured in firing by Border Guard Bangladesh men at Birampur in Dinajpur on Tuesday afternoon. The dead were identified as Shahin, 32, and Md Sultan, 25, both residents of Jagannathpur under the upazila. Upazila officer-in-charge Md Amiruzzaman said a BGB team seized Indian smuggled clothes from Birampur Railway Station around 4:00pm and left the station. Immediately after the seizure, the ‘smugglers’ gathered in the area and tortured a BGB source, he said. On hearing it, the BGB members came to the area again when the ‘smugglers’ swooped on them, the OC said. He, quoting the BGB members, said the BGB team opened fire in their self-defence, leaving Shahin and Sultan dead on the spot and two other injured around 5:00pm. Locals, however, claimed that Shahin and Shukur were ‘common people’ and used to run shops in the area. He said additional police were deployed in the area. As the news spread in the area, locals blocked the Birampur-Dinajpur highway by felling tree logs and keeping the bodies on the road, police and locals said. They said that police had been trying to calm the situation till filing of the report at 8:45pm.
