Compressed Natural Gas-run auto-rickshaw owners and workers blocked Dhaka-Mawa highway at Balukandi bus stand of Gajaria in Munshiganj, protesting the government’s move of banning them on the highways across the country.

Traffic movement on the Dhaka-Mawa highway halted around 10:00am and created long tailbacks on the both sides of the highway.

Bhaberchar highway police camp in-charge, Saiful Islam, said a group of owners and workers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws blocked the street this morning, snapping road communications between Dhaka and Munshiganj.

They were trying to arrange a dialogue between the demonstrators and the authorities to resolve the crisis, Islam said.

Earlier on Monday, the government imposed a ban on the movement of three-wheeler and non-motorised vehicles on the highways across the country with effect from August 1 to mitigate road accidents.
