Another student, Emdadullah (23), was killed in crossfire by police in the capital on Saturday night. The incident occurred late on Saturday night at Rupnagar area in Mirpur. According to one statement, Emdadullah was a first year honours student of Dhaka College. His father’s name is Jamal uddin and mother is Anwara Begum. Hailing from Jamalpur sadar upazila of Jamalpur district, Emdadullah was also a student activist of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and President of ward no. 93 of Shibir Dhaka City East section.
According to the statement, Emdadullah was picked up by police from his house located in Mirpur 6 at about 7 pm local time in the evening. Later, he was escorted on a raid upon several student mess houses in the capital, where 9 more students were detained by the police. Emdadullah was then taken to a spot in Rupnagar area late at night, where he was killed by firing. In order to avert blame for the incident, his dead body was left upon the steps of Dhaka Medical College Hospital by police.
Police, on the other hand, have claimed that Emdadullah was killed in a shootout incident with miscreants. Mirpur Model Thana police officer on duty, Bozlar Rahman, in a statement to mass media, claimed that police arrested several activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Shibir at around 10 pm Saturday night. Later, based on information, they were taken to Beribadh area of Rupnagar thana in a raid to uncover arms and petrol bombs, where their armed associates, who were hiding, tried to snatch them from police. Police retaliated by opening fire, which left Shibir activist Emdadullah dead on the spot. He further stated that police, after recovering the dead body, sent it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue.
Friends and family of the deceased, refuting the claims of police, have stated that Emdadullah was killed by the law enforcement agencies in cold blood solely due to his identity as an opposition activist and demanded the trial of the police officers involved, especially the notorious police OC of Mirpur thana, Salahuddin, who they say ordered the killing of student activist Emdadullah.
