Another Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed councillor candidate was arrested by the police at Hazaribagh in the capital on Friday morning.
The arrest of Abdul Khayer Bablu, 50, councillor candidate for ward-15 in the elections to Dhaka South City Corporation, took to four the number of BNP-backed councillor candidates in the Dhaka north and south city corporations arrested.
Abdul Khayer Bablu was arrested in Tally Office area of Hazaribagh at about 10:30am, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police acting deputy commissioner for media and public relations SM Jahangir Alam Sarker.
Abul Khayer is also the Dhanmondi thana BNP president.
Police said that he was accused in three cases of subversive activities filed with Dhanmondi police station. He was also wanted in a case field with Hazaribagh police station, the police said.
Earlier, Dhaka north city ward-11 councillor candidate ALM Kawser Ahmed was arrested by the Mirpur police on April 16 in front of Muhammadabad Mosque at Madhya Paikpara.
Dhaka South City Corporation ward-13 BNP-backed candidate Kazi Hasibur Rahman, also known as Shakil, was arrested at Chamelibagh of Paltan on the night of April 18.
Another BNP-backed councillor candidate, Osman Gani, also known as Shahjahan, for ward-34 of Dhaka North City Corporation was arrested at Madhubazar of Hazaribagh on April 20.
The chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, earlier directed the police not to harass or arrest candidates without reason, but not to spare anyone violating the law.
