A total of 8,589 people were killed and 17,524 others injured in road accidents in various parts of the country in 2014 calendar year, according to a report revealed on Thursday.
The report of Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association in its 2014 edition said the casualties took place in 5,921 road mishaps all over the country during the year.
Road Accident Monitoring Cell of the association prepared the report after collecting data in connection with road accidents from local print and electronic media, which stated that some 26,112 people faced road accidents.
According to the report findings, some 1,632 people had lost their key organs like hands and legs because of the mishaps while 2,222 women, 1,256 students, 1,469 children, 991 political leaders and activists, 215 law enforcers, 156 teachers, 142 government officials and employees, 90 lawyers, 68 journalists, 63 doctors and 63 engineers fell victim to such accidents.
In 2014, some 2,300 cases were lodged with police stations in connection with the road accidents and a total of 8,722 vehicles, including buses, trucks, covered vans, auto-rickshaws and motorbikes faced road mishaps.
