Durga idols vandalized Awami League minority attacks

Seven activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League were arrested as local people caught them after vandalising idols of Ganesh, Kartik and Ashur at a Durga Puja Mandap at Wazirpur in Barisal on Monday night.

The arrested people are Mehedi Hasan, Shamim Mridha, Badiul Islam, Masud Sheikh, Miraj Haoladar, Miraj Fakir, Sukdev Sarkar, leader and activists of BCL Syedkathi unit of Banaripara.

Witnesses said at least four people were injured while they tried to resist the attack of BCL men. The attackers vandalised three idols.

The president of the local Chairman Bari temple committee, Uttam Biswas said that some youths of nearby Syedkathi union engaged in altercation on Monday noon with the volunteers of puja mandap over collecting donation money for puja mandop.

Later at night, a group of BCL men led by Mehedi Hasan went to mandap and started beating all the volunteers and vandalise the idols.

Idols of Ganesh, Kartik and Ashur, furniture, decoration and items of worshiping were damaged in the attack. At one stage, local people resisted the attackers and caught them.

Officer-in-charge of Wazirpur police station Nurul Islam said the president of the temple committee, Uttam Biswas, as filed a case over the matter on Tuesday.

The arrested seven were sent to jail after producing before court said sub-inspector Nizamuddin this afternoon.
