Islami Chhatra Shibir and BNP have called separate hartals in Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions for Wednesday and Thursday respectively.
The local unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student body of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, will enforce a 48-hour hartal in eight districts of Rajshahi division from Wednesday, protesting the killing of a Chapainawabganj unit leader by ‘Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)’.
Asaduzzaman, publicity secretary of Rajshahi city Shibir, confirmed the shutdown.
The lockdown programme will begin at 6am on Wednesday and end at 6am on Friday.
The Rab members arrested Asadullah Tuhin, a 2nd year student of HSC and president of Chapainawabganj City College unit Chhatra Shibir, on Monday afternoon.
He was killed as a truck ran him over at Lalapara in Sadar upazila of the district in the early hours of Tuesday while the elite force members along with him were conducting a drive to recover crude bombs, claimed Rab.
Besides, district unit Jamaat called a daylong hartal in the district for Wednesday, protesting the arrest of its Charghat upazila unit ameer Prof Nazmul Haque.
Police arrested the Jamaat leader from his residence at Haldagachhi village in Charghat upazila on Monday night.
In Sylhet, local BNP called a dawn-to-dusk hartal for Thursday in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar districts protesting the filing of cases against its chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Assistant organising secretary of district BNP Shakhawat Hossain Jibon confirmed the hartal.
