38 Veiled Women Arrested in Bangladesh, Copies of Quran Seized


38 women were arrested by police from Kaliganj, Jhenaidah on Friday morning. Eye witnesses testified that, women from all Kaliganj used to regularly congregate at the place every Friday in order to listen and participate in
discussions of the Quran and Hadeeth. Witnesses confirmed that the women had been arrested from one such ongoing religious discussion program.

The arrested are:

Mahmuda Begum, Monowara Begum, Arjina Begum, Poly Begum, Haju Begum, Kona, Rebeca, Moyuri Begum, Selina Begum, Morshida Khatun, Rahida Khatun, Tania Khatun, Nila Begum, Eeti Khatun, Mahfuza Begum, Morzina Khatun, Ruma Khatun, Hira Khatun, Rehena, Nur Jahan, Husne ara Begum, Afsana Khatun, Mina Begum, Firoza Khatun, Asma Khatun, Salma Khatun, Rebeca Khatun, Parvina Khatun, Naseema, Nurjahan, Lakhi Begum, Hazera Begum, Sufiya Khatun, Sabina Begum, Sajeda, Rahima Khatun and Shirina. 

Police informed the media that all of the arrested women are allegedly members and active supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami. At the same time, police also informed that they had arrested the residence owner Abdus Sobur,
along with a Madrassah teacher named Saiful Islam.
Kaliganj thana police claimed that about 50 women were conducting a meeting at the house of Jamaat leader Abdus Sobhan at Dhakalepara, Kaliganj in Jhenaidah. Police said that the women were arrested due to a police
raid at the gathering. Police informed that they had seized copies of Jamaat related books and several copies of the Quran.
