At least 20 activists of Progressive Student Alliance were injured on Wednesday as ruling Awami League-backed student body Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked a procession brought out to protest at ‘admission trade’ by BCL leaders in front of Government Tolaram College in Narayanganj. Eyewitnesses and police said activists of the alliance, a combine of left student organisations, brought out the procession around 11:00am to press home their demands for stopping admission manipulation by the BCL leaders and ensuring quality education and environment of education on the campus. A group of BCL activists swooped on the procession, assaulted the marchers indiscriminately and forced them out of the campus, they said. In a statement, Bangladesh Students’ Union central president Hasan Tarek condemned the barbaric assault by BCL men and demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers. Ashraful Alam Sohel, general secretary of Bangladesh Chattra Federation, called for a strong movement if the attackers were not punished immediately. He announced that they would hold a demonstration in front of Madhu’s Canteen at Dhaka University today in protest at the attack. Md Mostafa, sub-inspector of Fatulla Model Thana, said BCL activists were protesting against the Jamat-Shibir hartal and an unwanted situation occurred when both the groups faced each other.
